The AI Layoff Headlines Are Missing Half the Story

Scroll LinkedIn for five minutes this month and you'll hit another one: a company announcing layoffs and naming AI as the reason. Monday.com did it recently. So did a growing list of tech companies that TechCrunch has been tracking all year. Even LinkedIn itself trimmed jobs as part of its own AI-driven restructuring, which is the kind of detail that makes this whole conversation feel a little too close to home for the people scrolling past it.

Here's what we think gets lost in those headlines. "AI caused this layoff" is doing a lot of work as a phrase, and it's not always telling you the truth. Sometimes it means a role got genuinely automated. Sometimes it means leadership needed a clean, forward-looking explanation for a decision that was really about margins, or a bad quarter, or a reorg that had been coming for a year. AI is a convenient story because nobody expects you to argue with "the technology is moving fast." It's a lot harder to say "we overhired in 2023 and we're correcting for it now."

We spend most of our time helping brands figure out how to say true things well, which means we've sat in plenty of rooms where leadership is deciding how to talk about change internally. And the thing that actually determines whether a restructuring lands well with the people who stay isn't whether AI gets mentioned. It's whether the explanation is honest. Teams can tell the difference between a real strategic shift and a buzzword doing PR work for a decision nobody wants to own. When the story doesn't hold up, trust erodes fast, and it doesn't come back with the next town hall.

So if you're a leader thinking through how to communicate a workforce change this year, our advice isn't about AI at all. It's about specificity. Say what actually changed, why and what it means for the people still in the building. The companies that get this right aren't hiding behind the technology. They're using it as one real factor among several, named honestly, inside a bigger strategy that people can actually see.

That's a harder conversation to have than "AI did it." It's also the only one that keeps a team's trust intact.
