Ads Are Moving Into the Conversation. Act Like a Guest.

There's a specific kind of annoyed you feel when a friend is giving you a restaurant recommendation and halfway through you realize they're getting paid for it. That feeling is about to become a real marketing problem, because ads are officially moving into AI chats.

The numbers are moving fast. ChatGPT Ads expanded to 31 European markets after the August rollout, OpenAI is testing a click objective next to its original reach objective, and ads per user per hour on the US mobile app grew by an average of 26% a month between April and August. Google is testing paid placements inside AI answers too. This isn't an experiment in a corner anymore. It's inventory, and a lot of brands are going to rush to buy it.

The part we found most interesting is a rule OpenAI added: a competing brand's ad can't show up inside a conversation about another brand. For a young ad platform, that's an unusual amount of restraint, and we think it tells you exactly what's at stake. People treat these chats like they're asking someone they trust. The second that trust feels bought, the whole thing gets worse for everybody, platforms and advertisers included.

So if your brand is going to show up in someone's conversation, act like a guest in their kitchen. Be useful, be relevant to what they actually asked and get out of the way. An ad that answers the question someone was already asking will feel like help. An ad that interrupts will feel like the friend with the commission.

There's plenty of early chatter that these ads convert cheaper than search, and some of that is probably true, since someone typing a detailed question is usually further along than someone typing three words into Google. But that early data mostly comes from advertisers themselves, so we'd treat it as a promising first read, not a sure thing.

Our advice: test it, measure it honestly and write for it like a person is on the other end. Because in this channel, one very much is.
